En 1999, Diego Fernando Pinzón, padre soltero con dos hijos y grandes esperanzas de mejorar su vida y la de sus hijos, emigró a Estados Unidos en busca de oportunidades. Él comenzó a trabajar en trabajos ocasionales; entregando pizza, cortando césped, almacenando almacenes, etc. Su objetivo siempre fue iniciar un negocio una vez que se estableciera y tuviera algo de dinero ahorrado. Su negocio de computadoras en Colombia, que estaba reparando y vendiendo hardware, era demasiado difícil aquí debido a sus barreras idiomáticas.
